Families encouraged to report income; apply for meal benefits

ECS Logo

Unreported family income and a lack of qualifying families applying for free and reduced-price meals may be causing Elizabethton City Schools (ECS) to forgo various types of funding. For this reason, ECS administrators want to encourage all parents to all parents to complete the Household Income Form for Technology and qualifying middle and high school parents to apply for free and reduced-price meals.

The household income form and a link to apply for free and reduced-price meal benefits are available in Skyward Family Access with other student data forms. Parents should complete these by Aug. 18. If they do not have a Skyward Family Access account, they should contact their child’s school with a current email address and request access.

The numbers of income eligible students that ECS reports determines how funding is awarded for federal programs, technology and more. These funds help cover programs for homeless and neglected students, teacher training and recruiting, English Learner programs, school nutrition programs and more.

Based on historic data, administrators believe qualifying families may not be applying or reporting income. This means there is less funding to hire and train teachers and less funding for various programs.

  • Elementary: Parents of elementary schools do not need to apply for free and reduced-price meals thanks to the Community Eligibility Provision. However, they still need to complete the Household Income Form for Technology.
  • TAD & EHS: Parents of students at T. A. Dugger Junior High School and Elizabethton High School should also complete the Household Income Form for Technology. To receive free or reduced-price meal benefits, qualify TAD and EHS families should apply online at https://www.myschoolapps.com or pick up a paper application in the school office.

More information and a link to apply for free and reduced-price meal benefits available at ECSchools.net on the Nutrition Department page, along with a FAQ page.
