The thoughts of a coffee shop at EHS brought complete happiness to staff and students. Tuffy's Cafe is already a big success at EHS and made $480 from drink sales on the first opening day. The EHS State Dual Credit Intro to Business class first mentioned the idea of a coffee shop a few years ago. Because of Covid, the idea was not able to come to reality until last year when a group of Business Entrepreneurship students presented the idea at a Community Partnership meeting. Several people attending wanted to find a way to help the students with the planning stages of the coffee shop. The coffee shop helps students have more hands-on experience in marketing, customer service, and problem-solving. Tuffy's Cafe is a school-based enterprise that students run in areas of business, culinary, and special education. The coffee is a unique blend picked out by students a Doe River Roasters that they have named Betsy Brew. The transformation of an office in the EHS library to a coffee shop took a lot of planning and research for the design plan on a budget and limited space. However, students and staff worked together to make the space fun and welcoming. Angie Wilber, a business teacher at EHS, helped make the coffee shop dream a reality. The goal of the coffee shop managed and operated by students is to provide students with unique learning experiences and real-life job experiences. In addition, Tuffy's Café and Cyclone Shop offers business opportunities for students to learn through a work-based environment. A big thank you to several partnerships that helped make Tuffy's Cafe possible from an XQ grant, Carter County Bank, Chamber of Commerce, Doe Rosters, Coffee Co., and East TN Foundation Entrepreneurship Course and Elizabethton City Schools.
The coffee shop is open from 7 am- 7:30 am before school and during 3rd period.
